Measure frequency and freshness
A line played twenty times three years ago is less relevant than a line used four times this month. Treat recent repetition as a stronger clue than lifetime volume.
- Filter by the color they will play
- Prioritize the last twelve months
- Notice rating and time-control context
- Mark meaningful deviations
Prepare plans, not traps
A narrow tactical surprise can be useful, but your main preparation should explain the resulting pawn structure, ideal piece placement, and common exchanges. That knowledge survives an early deviation.
Know when to stop
Once you can state your plan for the three most likely branches, stop researching. Use the remaining time to solve positions from those structures and rest before the game.
